Add User Feedback when user submits multiple search terms where one or more is less than 2 characters long

Reported by Walter McGinnis | May 13th, 2010 @ 02:51 PM

Users often search for a name, such as R Olsthoorn without quotes to identify the search as for an exact phrase. With the current set up, the "R" is a search term and casts an extremely wide net for Zebra index search and Zebra is slow to respond (and may back up other requests as a result).

When a user gives a search that has a term that has less than two characters and there is another search term, before running the search we should ask them something like the following to prompt them to use quotes for the phrase:

"you searched for a single letter and another search term, did you really want to search for a phrase? if so, wrap your search in quotes for faster results."

This could be done in javascript with an onclick on the search button to look at the search terms field.

We may also want to add a ? link that gives other search input options (such as use of quotes and booleans) in a short guide, but that should be put in a separate ticket.

    • State changed from “new” to “invalid”

Unfortunately quoting a search that has single characters in doesn't seem to solve the slowness, so this won't help the problem.
