Contextual Search

Reported by Kieran P | April 2nd, 2009 @ 11:54 AM | in 1.3 (closed)

Provide a means to pull 'other resources' from various sources and display it on the search results. Start with feeds and expand to accept other sources.

  • Create a new SearchSource model, containing id, title, source_type, base_url and limit columns.

  • Provide a link to a new ActiveScaffold resource for editing search sources. title/limit/base_url should be textboxes, and type should be a dropdown containing one option for now (Feed)

  • When a search is made, append the search term to the base url, and parse the url with feed normalizer. Append the result to the search results under the heading 'Other Resources'.

After first take of the functionality is done:

  • When javascript is enabled, replace the synchronous request to the feed with an asynchronous update of the other resources box so the page load isn't held up by feed normalizer, as will be the case if the feed is large or unreachable.

  • If needed, fork and modify feed-normalizer to setup links according to the rel value in the feed (as feeds can have related links as well as a link for the feed item, and they can be in any order)

Contextual search takes place on any item's detail page as a side bar. This first implementation will use the item's title as as the search term that is appended to the SearchSource#base_url as URL query parameter value.

This functionality should also display thumbnails if present in the SearchSource results.
