Moderation options are confusing

Reported by Andy Robertson | October 20th, 2009 @ 02:37 PM

In 1.2 when a topic is to be moderated the options are

Make this revision live

This can be confusing to the moderator, to some the wording of reject looks back to front.

Make this revision live actually means "Reject the moderation request and make the revision live"

reject means "Agree with the moderation, keep it in history list and do not make it live"

"Make this revision live" is used not only in the case of moderation requests, but also browsing past versions of an item. In those cases, the altered texts do not correctly reflect what will happen.

A description could be added under the links to explain what will happen instead.

I think everyone's suggestions on this are probably wrong.

Reject actually means "mark this version as rejected by a moderator and prevent it from ever being the live version shown on the item detail page". There is no "take this out of the version history for item" option currently. I think this to be what some of your users found confusing.

My feeling is that recording the process of a version being rejected is important to the complete history of an item, thus we don't "delete" versions when rejecting them.

We actually have a request to do some work around the rejection process and we'll keep the point of this ticket in mind when working on it. The proposed work boils down to this:

    • when a moderator rejects a version that is pending moderation or flagged for moderation they will have an option to limit who may "preview" the version to those with the moderator role or above, thus giving the option to completely shield the public from viewing an offensive version.

During that work, we'll revisit the interface for this and hopefully make it more clear.
