Update Google Maps API version to 3 and consolidate ym4r and custom Google Maps library to gmaps4rails gem

Reported by Walter McGinnis | August 19th, 2011 @ 03:31 PM | in 1.3 (closed)

Kete uses Google Maps in the following ways (if configured to do so):

  • browse/search results that have location data
  • adding location data as a field widget to an item
  • displaying the corresponding location data on an item's show action page

I have identified a Ruby on Rails Engine called gmaps4rails which is based on Google Maps API version 3 that is available as a gem that hopefully can replace most of our custom Google Maps code and the y4mr/GM plugin that we include, both of which are based on Google Maps API version 2 which is throwing JavaScript warnings now.

gmaps4rails is aimed at Rails 3 or greater and it may take extra work to get it to work with Kete's current Rails 2.3.5 version. In addition, it is not clear if gmaps4rails can provide the search/marker set functionality we need for the field widget.

Functionality complete. Configuration has now been moved into system settings. Used gmaps4rails. Will be merged into master shortly.

Some pretty massive UI improvements to setting locations via maps!
