Unable to have read only private items

Reported by Kieran P | August 18th, 2008 @ 02:11 PM

In the event someone makes a basket, adds private items to it, then turns off privacy controlls, the controlls to search private items disappear.

This means that you can never have read only private items (you either don't have them, or have them but allows others to make them).

It's a rare case, and easy to fix, but it adds a query (counting private items and checking if > 0) to the method that checks if it should show privacy controls.

What do you think should happen in this case?

    Perhaps not the right question.

Should we simply disallow disabling privacy controls in the basket form if there are any existing private items?

Obviously we need to make this clear to the basket administrator in the form.

I think this would give more consistent and expected behavior in the interface. If you allow for disabling privacy controls, but then don't actually disable them when there are existing private items then the basket administrator gets a roadblock to achieving their goal, but without an explanation.

Better to fail early by not allowing them to disable the privacy controls in this case.

My opinion on this is that we should allow disabling privacy controls and hide all the controls and search functionality from the given basket where are they disabled - which I believe is current functionality.

If we disallow the disabling of privacy controls, I can see a use case where a basket admin accidentally enables them or enables them to see how they work on an already populated basket or to experiment with, and then strikes a problem when they can't be disabled again?

The current functionality makes sense to me.

Ok, lets just leave this as is and see what actual users tell us they want. Please resolve this ticket.

    Cheers, Walter
