tinymce word count in rails

How do you do a wordcount using tinymce editor in rails? I tried using setup but it wasn't an option in the .yml file so I tried putting the javascript to do the word count in setupcontent_callback but it wouldn't work either. I am using the tinymce plugin. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
